There will be two big bike cycling events this Saturday, May 7 and both will be in Sembalun village, a mountain resort on the eastern foothill of Mount Rinjani. About 250 participants from the province and other cities will participate.

“These events are organized on the same day but by two different groups. The first event is Garuda Sembalun Challenge 2016 organized by Lombok Bike Community, a road bike event. The second event is Rinjani Enduro Challenge 2016, an mountain bike event,” said Andy Hadianto, chairman of sports committee of West Nusa Tenggara province, on Monday (2/5).

Garuda Sembalun Challenge

“More than 80 cyclists from NTB, Bali, Makassar, West Java, East Java, Manado, Singapore and Brunei will participate in the Sembalun road bike challenge that will ride on a 115 km route from Mataram to Sembalun,” said Andy.

This is a challenging route with only two stops being one in Terara and another one in Swela. “The route will offer steep and long climbs up to the Mount Rinjani hill foot. It will take around seven hours to complete,” said Andy.

“Total elevation gain is about 2,120 meters with beautiful sceneries along the roads,” said Julius Phonsen, organizing committee.

Rinjani Enduro Challenge

The second event is a mountain bike enduro challenge. There are 150 participants from the province and other cities. “Participants will be host in Sembalun camping ground on May 6. The challenge will start on May 7 at about 8 am with participants and their bikes being loaded onto trucks to get to Post 1 at about 1600 meter above sea level position. From there participants will race their bike down the hill to Kokok Kemangi beach,” Nugroho Dewo, organizing committee.

“The track will be challenging. It is 70% new track, 80% down, 20% roll, and 90% single track,” said Dewo.

“Before the event we also did a charity event by donating books and soccer balls to local schools,” said Dewo.

Sembalun at the foothill of Mount Rinjani will once again witness hundreds of cyclists from across the country and beyond test their muscles and stamina to challenge the law of gravity and to enjoy the beauty of mother nature. (LI/KM)
