Part 1: Going Crazy at Sendang Gile Waterfall

Initially we just wanted to escape from the town and spend one night in the tranquility of Senaru mountain resort in North Lombok, about 84km from Mataram where we live on one weekend in May. But then we wanted to make the best of our time and Senaru and decided to go to see Sendang Gile waterfall.
It was Saturday morning. My 8 years old son, Dimas, was not patient to wait for his sister, Cahya, 11 years old, and his mom to get ready for a walk to the waterfall. After having breakfast at Sinar Rinjani Cottage, a nice fried noodle, and checkout the hotel, good price only Rp250,000 per room per night, we drove to the entrance of Sendang Gile waterfall.
At about 9 am we entered the waterfall complex and paid an official entrance fee of Rp5,000 per person. Some young boys were offering guide service to us but I politely rejected it because we thought it was only a short walk and we wanted some privacy. We then started to walk along a well maintained concrete walking path together with many other visitors. The path was mostly going down.
It took only 15 minute walk to get to Sendang Gile waterfall. When we saw the waterfall, my kids were so excited and ran quickly to get to waterfall as close as possible. My daughter could not help herself but taking off her shoes and going down to the river below the waterfalls. “I wanted to feel the water, how cool it is,” she said. Some visitors even took a bath right under the falling water.
I preferred to just sit down on concrete seat and ordered a coffee to a nearby food stall and took photograph of the environs, the waterfall and the people.
Mr. Nafsiah, the coffee shop owner, told me that the waterfall continued to flow even during dry season period (April – September). Many domestic and foreign visitors came to the waterfall everyday. “During holidays, many visitors from Malaysia and Jakarta came here,” said Mr. Nafsiah who had sold food for ten years in this location.

Crazy Waterfall

Sendang Gile waterfall is located at an elevation of 486 above sea level in Senaru village, Bayan district of North Lombok regency; within the authority of Rinjani National Park. This 30 meter high waterfall was formed in the escarpment wall composed of andesite lava at the top and breccia at the bottom. At the upper part, the joints are parallel with the escarpment forming cascading waterfalls.

According to Mr. Nafsiah, Sendang Gile means crazy waterfall. It was named so because people who visited this waterfall became crazy for its beauty and crazily rushed to the bottom of the waterfall to take a bath and to get soaked with the cool water. They spent hours playing with water. Hence the name Sendang Gile came to existence.

Then I asked him some questions about Tiu Kelep waterfall. He told me that it was not far from here, only about 15 minute walk. Wow! If it were that close, why did not we go there. (To be continued in Part 2) (LI/KM)
